So here’s a question: are our line endings in poetry governed by science or instinct? Should we be ruled by ‘the unit that is the line’ or should we respond to our own sense of rhythm and the imperative of the narrative? This is a thorny one. How to end a novel?

My current dilemma is should I spell out the ending with a drum roll and ta-da! or let the reader turn off the spotlight and draw the heavy red velvet curtains themselves as the actors leave the stage? Any thoughts gratefully received. In the meantime, here’s a picture of a stage:
